Be a Giver of Light

The Church uses various items so that we can celebrate the Divine Services and express our Faith. For example, prosfora is the offering bread that individuals bring, and that bread is used for Holy Communion. Others bring the wine that is also used for Holy Communion. Oil is also needed for the vigil candles in the Holy Altar. Because of your love for Christ and the Church, and your generosity, the parish has ample supplies of all of these.

Some have asked for other ways to contribute to the liturgical ministry, and sponsoring the beeswax candles that we light when we enter the Narthex is one additional way to participate. Individuals and families can sponsor a particular Sunday or Feast Day to provide the candles that others will light when entering the Narthex. Those sponsoring the candles on that day can write the names of their loved ones, both living and departed, and Father Gregory will commemorate those names before and during the Divine services. Please remember that Father Gregory prays for all of the people for whom we ask, and it is not necessary to sponsor candles or any other item in order to submit names to be commemorated.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). We affirm this truth about Jesus when we light candles. Jesus enlightens us to seek salvation and avoid the sinful ways of life that separate us from God and one another. When we enter the Church, we are encouraged to light candles and to pray for our living and deceased family members, and also to thank the Lord for the blessings that we have, including the light of another day.

If you would like to sponsor the candles for any day, please see or call

Mrs. Roula Roussos (Call the Parish Office for contact information).
